(ADAPTATION) MATTERS
Can reframing the way we ‘see’ waste, encourage us to adapt our daily rituals?
In this seemingly nonsensical scene, preconceived notions of waste collapse. Can entertaining the idea of literally preparing and treating ‘waste’ in the same manner we do food, prompt a shift in perceived value and mindset.
This on-going project will begin and focus on cellulose-based domestic waste, found as by-product or waste in our homes, such as tea bags, floral waste, packaging, vegetable scrap & more, and explore what is needed to treat it with the same care, curiosity, hunger and essentiality as we do fresh produce and provision. A small feast, a bounty, an abundant resource.
Utilising the rhetoric of food preparation throughout history, and the 21st century domestic kitchen as a playground, what can be discovered, recovered and unfurled?

For everybody, (something) matters. Established in 2023 by Marlo Lyda and Jordan Fleming, MATTERS is an emerging collective platform that advocates for time and intention in the process of designing. Created as an outlet for topics relevant in today’s world, MATTERS aims to highlight design as a shared philosophy that is experienced within the community. Prompted by the question ‘what MATTERS to you?’, a notable collection of Australian and international designer-makers have been invited to explore ‘process’ as the key instigator for new design possibilities. Curated by Australian-born designer Marlo Lyda as part of Futures Collective, each practitioner’s concept is gradually developed, and the results are presented in 3 exhibitions, spaced over 3 years: (NO THINGS), (SOME THINGS), and (EVERYTHING) MATTERS. During MDW 2023, the first instalment, (NO THINGS) MATTERS occupies the ground floor of Villa Alba Museum. Hosting a tactile cornucopia of material samples, interpreted tools, experimental forms, and visual documentation. Inviting audiences to engage with design thinking from its infancy and to follow along on the journey as participants’ works manifest into reality. The exhibition display for (NO THINGS) MATTERS is created entirely from reclaimed materials, as part of an ongoing collaboration between MATTERS and Second Edition, a Sydney-based spatial studio advocating for resource recovery through thoughtful demolition. This sustainable display is sourced from discarded packaging, primarily packing sheets, single use crane slings, and cardboard shipping tubes.
